WALK THRU FIRE COLT IS $157,000 SALE TOPPER AT LOS ALAMITOS EQUINE SALE
LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA.... The Los Alamitos Equine Sale enjoyed a strong second session that was pretty much on par with the second yearling session of 2008. The average for yearlings on the second session this year was a solid $14,417, only 4% less than the numbers for the second day of the 2008 session.
The management of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale expected solid numbers for this year's second session based on an attractive catalog. The horses and buyers delivered on the expectation, as nine of the 15 high sellers were purchased on day two of the sale, including the $157,000 high seller, a Walk Thru Fire colt consigned by Burns Ranch. Ramiro Villarreal Guajardo purchased Dexter Morgan (Hip #328) for the sale-topping price. The sorrel colt is out of the outstanding broodmare Fames Easy, who over the years has produced the multiple Grade 1 stakes placed filly Miss Kittys Bar Bet ($264,188), Kindergarten Futurity runner-up and All American Derby qualifier Dont Dink With Me ($164,153), and Ynot Bar, runner-up in the Governor's Cup Futurity, finalist in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, and a winner of $136,480.
"This horse will probably go to Texas," said Villarreal Guajardo, who finished as the sale's leading buyer after purchasing 11 horses for $331,800.
Dexter Morgan is named after the main character of the popular Showtime TV series "Dexter".
"Burns Ranch enjoyed a pretty good sale here," said Jo Rae Burns. "We are happy with how things went for our consignments and excited to have the sale topper."
Both Ed Allred and Frank "Scoop" Vessels, the organizers of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale, were also pleased with the numbers for the second day of the sale.
"Today was a good sale," Allred said.
"There was a lot of action, a good buzz, and it was a lot of fun," Vessels added. "We are pleased with what we saw today."
The total figures for the 2009 Los Alamitos Equine Sale held up nicely when compared to last year's sale. The total average of $11,762 for the 304 horses sold was down only 8.65% from 2008 figures when 469 horses were sold. The broodmare catalog enjoyed a solid increase of 29.75% - with 44 mares sold going for an average of $7,911 up from 90 mares sold for an average of $6,097 in 2008. The average for mixed stock (stallions and horses of racing age) more than doubled with seven horses sold averaging $9,557 per head. Last year's mixed stock (which included weanlings) averaged $3,788 for 48 head sold, so the 2009 average number increased by 152%. The average for yearlings was down 21.9% this year, but that due in large part to the big purchase of last year's sale topper Harems Las Dash of $375,000. Yearlings sold for an average of $12,492 in 2009, down from last year's average of $15,996. A total of 366 horses entered the sale ring and only 62 were repurchased. The 16.9% repurchase rate for the 2009 sale compares favorably when put against the 18.9% final repurchase rate from the 2008 sale.

Atwood Ranches purchased the daughter of First Down Dash for $100,000 from the consignment of Vessels Stallion Farm and Boyles Family Trust. Sheza Shy Shahayla's morther is the multiple stakes winner of $65,870 Shahayla.
The third highest seller was Hip #270 Peaces Fire Walker, a filly from the consignment of Spencer L. Childers Family Trust. Abigail Kawananakoa purchased the Walk Thru Fire filly out of Be Peacefull for $87,000. Kawananakoa also signed the ticket for $45,000 for a full sister to All American Futurity winner No Secrets Here. Consigned by Vessels Stallion Farm LLC, Aint No Saint (Hip #313) is the daughter of First Down Dash and out of Dicey Secret.
