FOUR BOYLE AND SIEGEL HORSES TO BE FEATURED IN THE LOS ALAMITOS EQUINE SALE
LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA... Owners Don Boyle and Wade Siegel are just two of many prominent horsemen with yearlings entered in this year's Los Alamitos Equine Sale on October 3rd and 4th. With four horses from their farm taking part in the 2009 auction, Boyle and Siegel are excited to see their babies enter the Equine Sale ring.
"Wade (Siegel) and I feel like the Los Alamitos Equine Sale is the premier venue for Quarter Horses here on the West Coast, so naturally we wanted to be a part of it," explained his Quarter Horse partner Don Boyle. "Last year was our first time participating in this sale. Our goal is simply to turn out horses that will be able to compete here in the area and to encourage a lot of repeat customers. That's what it's all about is attracting new buyers and giving them horses that they can do well with."
Included in Boyle and Siegel's yearling quartet are two horses by the Thoroughbred sire Snowbound. The first is hip number 97, a colt named Rfd Big Snow out of the Takin On The Cash mare Raining Fresh Daisys. "He's out of a half-sister to Strawkins that we raced with some success until she got injured in her three-year-old year and had to be retired," Boyle recalled. "This is her first foal and he seems to have the same excellent disposition that she had. He's a big, strappy kind of colt with good bone that should do whatever is asked of him."
Their second prospect by Snowbound is the filly Arctic Circle. Hip number 320 in this year's sale, she hails from the eight-year-old On A High mare Dorothy Nell. "Her mom raced all over the world," Don added. "She raced at Los Alamitos, up in the Northwest part of the country, and in Canada. Another thing that makes her sort of unique is that she won at distances varying from 300 to 870 yards and virtually everything in between. Arctic Circle is another one that we like. She shows a lot of refinement for a son or daughter of Snowbound."
Aside from Rfd Big Snow, Wade and Siegel also have another yearling that's closely related to the two-time AQHA Champion Strawkins. Hip number 155 is Current Sea, a half-brother to Strawkins by the sire Separatist. A twelve-time winner of over $600,000, his older brother Strawkins captured seven stakes races lifetime, including the 2006 Rainbow Derby and the 2007 Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos.
"Those kinds of horses really spoil you," said Boyle with a laugh. "Then you expect all of your others to run just like them. I hope he wasn't a once in a lifetime type of horse for us. Strawkins is still at our farm here at the house. He really has an excellent temperament. In fact, my grandkids play with him all the time. He's just a real pleasure to be around. Of course now our hope is that his siblings will share that same talent and disposition that he has. Current Sea really got a lot of Separatist in him and is a colt that we really have high hopes for. He has a hind end that just won't quit."
Rounding out the group of four is hip number 221, Country Thyme. Out of the Canadian Champion A Special Martini, Country Thyme is by the young sire Country Chicks Man. "We use a lot of computer matching technology when we're deciding which mares to breed to which stallions," Don explained. "This colt has a pretty similar breeding pattern to All American Futurity winner Dm Shicago. Country Chicks Man seemed like he was not only a durable runner, but a very versatile one as well and we were interested in him right from the start. I also loved his bottom side pedigree. Country Zevi is just a wonderful broodmare."
The second foal out of this dam, Country Thyme is out of one of Boyle's best racehorses to date in A Special Martini. "She did very well for us until a slab fracture forced her retirement during her four-year-old year," Don recalled. "Country Thyme is a little tank. He's already got a lot of muscle for his age. I don't think he's ever going to be really tall, but he'll have good size. We're hoping that he'll display some of the same heart that his dad did on the racetrack."
An eight-year-old stallion by Chicks Beduino, Country Chicks Man won ten stakes races lifetime and qualified to the prestigious Champion Of Champions here at Los Alamitos on two separate occasions. A thirteen-time winner, he banked $736,793 throughout his lengthy racing career.
